DESCRIPTION

Air suspension on trailers/semi-trailers ensures not only gentler treatment of the load being hauled but also less wear and tear on the roads. This aspect is of growing importance as traffic volume becomes increasing dense. As a rule, each axle has two air springs. In multi-axle combinations, one axle is frequently provided with an axle-lifting device to protect the tires on empty runs or when the vehicle is only partially loaded. Convoluted air springs usually are used for raising and lowering lift axles.

In buses, air springs deliver safety and ride comfort. Thanks to the self-leveling system, the vehicle maintains the same level, which means that the boarding level also remains unchanged, regardless of the number of passengers. With additional control functions, the vehicle body can “kneel”, which aids entry and alighting. This generally entails fitting two air springs to the front axle and trailing axle and four on the rear or drive axles.

Comfort

Car and truck manufacturers are increasingly turning to air bag suspensions as a viable alternative. Doing away with conventional springs allows for a much smoother ride, something you can’t get with metal springs. After all, you are - quite literally - floating on a cushion of air!

Flexibility

Do you want to arrive at the next family reunion with your vehicle riding impressively low to the pavement while at the same time avoid the inevitable scrapes from a large speed bump? No problem. An air bag suspension allows you the best of both worlds with the flip of a switch. If a heavy load has the rear end of your truck squatting lower than usual, the height-control valve (part of the ECAS*) will keep the load level and stable.
