Which is better, 304 or 420 stainless steel?

Normally, grade 420 stainless steel has a tensile strength of around 586 MPa—high, but not higher than grade 304 stainless steel (621 MPa). However, when hardened and stress relieved, grade 420 stainless steel has a tensile strength of 1,586 MPa, nearly three times as strong as it is when annealed.

What are the weaknesses of 304 stainless steel?

304 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 °C (140 °F).
