Introduction

A pulse oximeter measures oxygen saturation. Before we learn how a pulse oximeter works, we need to understand what oxygen saturation is, and we all know that we need oxygen to sustain life. Oxygen enters the lungs and then into the blood. Blood carries oxygen to the various organs of our body. The main way we carry oxygen in our blood is through hemoglobin. You can think of the hemoglobin molecule (Hb) as the "car" and the "road" as our blood vessels. Oxygen molecules enter these cars and move around the body until they reach their destination. Hemoglobin without oxygen is called deoxyhemoglobin (Deoxy Hb). Oxygenated hemoglobin, we call it oxyhemoglobin (Oxy Hb), and hemoglobin without oxygen, we call it deoxyhemoglobin (Deoxy Hb). Oxygenated hemoglobin, we call it oxyhemoglobin (Oxy Hb).
