Biodegradation Process of PLA (Polylactic Acid)
1. Environmental Conditions:
PLA biodegrades more effectively in composting environments that provide optimal conditions, such as elevated temperatures (typically above 50°C or 122°F), moisture, and microbial activity.
2. Hydrolysis:
The first step in the biodegradation process is hydrolysis, where water molecules break down the PLA polymer chains into smaller oligomers and eventually into lactic acid. This reaction can be accelerated by heat and moisture.
3. Microbial Activity:
Once the PLA is broken down into lactic acid, it becomes available for microbial consumption. Various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, utilize lactic acid as a carbon source.
These microbes metabolize lactic acid, further breaking it down into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) through natural biochemical processes.
4. Complete Mineralization:
The final products of the biodegradation process are CO₂ and H₂O, which are released back into the environment. This process, known as mineralization, signifies the complete breakdown of PLA into harmless byproducts.
5. Time Frame:
The biodegradation time for PLA can vary widely based on environmental factors. In industrial composting conditions, PLA can degrade within a few months. In less optimal conditions, such as in soil or water, the degradation process may take longer, potentially several years.
