The main component of the desulphurizer is ferric oxide (Fe2O3). However, after being used for a certain period of time, the Fe2O3 loses its effectiveness, leading to a bad smell being emitted from the biogas. Therefore, replacement of the Fe2O3 is necessary.

The method of dry desulfurization is a popular solution due to its simplicity, efficiency and relatively low cost. It is most suitable for biogas with low concentration of biogas and hydrogen sulfide. The basic principle of the dry process is oxidation of H2S gas to sulfur or sulfur oxide with the help of O2, also known as dry oxidation.
