WHAT IS DRY ICE BLASTING?
Dry ice blasting is a non-destructive method of safely cleaning surfaces and/or removing unwanted coatings such as paint or rust; and most commonly used for industrial and commercial applications with dry ice as the cleaning media. Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide at temps of (−78.5 °C; −109.3 °F).
In very basic terms, the process involves "blast cleaning" a surface with compressed air, and dry ice particles, usually in the form of dry ice pellets. The combination of pressurized air and the presence of dry ice (CO2 pellets) in the blast stream, creates an explosive sublimation. This chain reaction allows for cleaning an intended surface in a non-destructive way, making dry ice blasting a preferred cleaning process when compared with other media blasting methods; such as glass bead, plastic bead, or sand blasting.
HOW DOES DRY ICE BLASTING WORK?
The easiest way to understand dry ice blasting is to first consider a consumer pressure washer.An electric pressure washer simply accelerates water with compressed air, then forces the water through a nozzle which creates even more pressure on the surface being cleaned.
In the case of a pressure washer the "media" used for cleaning surfaces is simply water (in some cases a detergent is added to the stream). However, this process uses a lot of water, which is wasteful (a.k.a "secondary waste"), and is not effective for cleaning hard to remove stains, coatings, debris, and contaminants.
Furthermore, pressurized water can damage to fragile and sensitive cleaning surfaces, such as electrical equipment, cables, and precision machined equipment (just to name a few).
When using a dry ice blasting machine, compressed air, and dry ice particles/pellets are used instead. Most importantly, when using the power of dry ice blasting we take advantage of kinetics (physics) and thermodynamics which result is a far superior method of cleaning.
