There are still many differences between GPF and DPF, the main difference being the substantial difference between gasoline and diesel exhaust. Compared with modern light diesel oil, the emission of particulate matter from gasoline engines is reduced by about 10-30 times, and this difference promotes different choices of the best filtration technology.

(1) The exhaust temperature of gasoline engine is relatively higher than that of diesel oil. Under urban driving conditions, the engine output temperature is between 300 and 500℃, but it can reach 700℃ at high speed. Although these temperatures are high enough to maintain the passive regeneration of GPF, oxygen is usually insufficient in the exhaust gas of GDI engine running at stoichiometric ratio. Therefore, GPF regeneration usually occurs during vehicle deceleration, when fuel supply is reduced to ensure sufficient oxygen in exhaust gas. GPF with oxygen storage capacity can realize active and passive regeneration in a short time.

(2) Compared with diesel engine, GDI has less soot emission, and its soot oxidation speed is much faster than that of diesel engine. Therefore, the loading rate of soot in GPF will not be too high, and the excessive heat release rate caused by soot oxidation will not be caused, so thermal durability is not considered as a problem.

(3) Low soot loading also allows the use of more compact and cheaper filters, because less precious metal materials can be used because of their smaller size. In diesel vehicles, the volume of filter is usually 1.5 to 2.5 times of engine displacement, while the volume of GPF can be smaller than the displacement.
