Dia 19mm Magnesium bar anode for water heater , extruded AZ31 magnesium alloy anode rod
The rod is screwed into the top of your water heater and protects your water heater from rusting.
When the tank is filled with water the anode rod sacrifices itself to protect the exposed steel of the water heater, through a method called electrolysis. Electrolysis happens when there are two pieces of metal connected inside of water, the process makes the anode rod corrode in place of the exposed steel in your water heater. During this process the more noble (less reactive) metal will corrode over the less (more reactive) noble metal. Aluminum, magnesium, and zinc are all much less noble than steel, meaning they will corrode before the steel, which is why they are used for anode rods.
When the potential polarity is reversed, it becomes a cathode, which will accelerate the corrosion of steel. Secondly, the zinc alloy anode will undergo intergranular corrosion in high-temperature water, causing the crystal grains to fall off directly without generating a protective current, resulting in a decrease in current efficiency. Aluminum-based alloy sacrificial anodes are generally used in seawater media, and are rarely used in fresh water, especially in water heaters. The United States has developed 8020 and K804 aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes used in fresh water, but has not been widely promoted and applied. At the same time, it has been found in medicine that the accumulation of aluminum in the brain is related to Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, the aluminum sacrifice of this alloy Anodes are rarely used in water heaters. 1.2 The sacrificial anode materials commonly used abroad for volumetric water heaters are AZ63 and AZ31 series of magnesium alloys with ultra-low impurity content in the ASTM B843-93 standard. Their typical chemical composition is AZ63: A1 5.3%~6.7%, Zn 2.5%~ 3.5%, Mn 0.15%min point 0.6%, Fe 0.003%max, Cu 0.02%max, Ni 0.001%max, Si 0.1%max, AZ31: A12.5%~3.5%, Zn 0.7%~1.3%, Mn 0.2 %Min, Fe 0.002%max, Cu 0.015max, Ni 0.001%max, Si 0.1%max. The above alloy has an open circuit potential of -1.55V to -1.65V and a current efficiency of 53.3 to 60% in hot water of 20 to 80.
