Sludge Storage Tank

Sludge storage tanks provide storage for biosolids and can serve as a location for thickening prior to further processing or disposal. Mixing in sludge storage tanks provides uniform sludge concentration, prevents sludge stratification, and ensures uniform feed to dewatering equipment.

A sludge storage tank is required to store sludge from any source. The sludge can be primary sludge, activated sludge, imported sludge, and scum. Sludge may be contaminated with heavy metals; it may contain chemical contaminants that require complex procedures to deal with. Pathogens, microorganisms, and sewage that may require biological treatment, food and beverage manufacturing, and agricultural waste may require additional treatment procedures.

During wastewater treatment, the water content is reduced, leaving behind sludge. This still contains a certain percentage of water, but as it settles, more water can be removed. The sludge can be subjected to further biological treatment, or sludge tanks can simply be used to store the sludge before it is removed.
