Leachate Storage Tank

Leachate ponds are typically large above-ground or underground ponds installed at landfills and waste collection points to collect stormwater runoff for treatment. These tanks prevent contaminated water from seeping into groundwater prior to treatment. Liners in large landfills help capture runoff, which is then piped to leachate ponds.

Leachate is the liquid collected in landfills after rainfall. Rainwater can leach pollutants from waste in landfills. Due to high levels of pollution including ammonia and other pathogens, leachate poses a serious environmental risk not only to public sewer systems and sewage treatment, but also to streams, rivers and lakes. Therefore, landfill leachate and liquid storage tanks for chemical collection are important specific applications recognized by waste management teams.

Most landfills allow the disposal of organic materials that produce methane when degraded. Methane released into the air is at risk of explosion, while dissolved methane in the leachate requires methane stripping. Other leachate applications include large manufacturers and mining operations such as coal and metal ores. Many rock mining processes produce sulfide-containing wastes. When sulfides come into contact with air, highly toxic sulfuric acid is produced.
