Metal cutting lasers are very useful tools for our production team - mainly because they can make micron-level precise cuts in metal sheets of varying thickness without causing undue distortion at the cut site
Compare this to a CNC punch, which uses physical force to shear metal from the cut site. Even with extremely sharp and powerful presses, the stress of cutting a sheet of metal of any appreciable thickness can cause some mechanical deformation of the workpiece - the thicker the metal being cut, the greater the deformation
Because laser cutting does not rely on physical forces, it can separate metals without tearing or uneven edges. This allows for cuts to be made in sheet metal, which means more parts can be made per sheet metal that is cut
Also, while the cutting edge of a CNC punch may wear out, a laser cutter will not damage the blade
Engraving Sheet Metal
At lower power settings, a laser cutter can be used to only partially cut a sheet of metal—leaving smooth, regular grooves in the surface. Laser engraving allows manufacturers to leave fine but unique marks on their sheet metal products. A customer used this feature to create custom carvings for a range of pizza oven panels for use in custom ovens for restaurants around the world

Laser cutting is also often used to make small cuts from larger sheets of metal. These cutouts are then used as small flat parts for other products
For example, a CNC press brake or other metal forming equipment can be used to make small cuts into computer drive brackets or miniature fan blades with additional work
