CNC laser cutting
Why use a laser to cut parts?
The main reason for using laser cutting technology is to reduce the mechanical stress that the metal sheet is subjected to when it is cut. Not only does the laser eliminate impact stress that can adversely affect sheet metal products during the cutting process, but the heated area is very small. This means that the rest of the workpiece has little or no exposure to heat, thus maintaining the properties of the material being processed.
Plus, because laser cuts can be made very close to each other without negatively impacting the sheet metal, they help minimize waste—tighter cuts allow you to make more per square foot of sheet metal used parts
How does CNC metal laser cutting work?
CNC metal laser cutting uses the concentrated heat of a laser to burn precise shapes into metal sheets. Where the laser touches, the metal melts and cuts the part from the sheet metal. Cutting gas is used to blow away any remaining molten material to ensure smooth and precise edges (this is usually nitrogen, but for thicker materials compressed air is more effective)
What can laser cutting be used for?
Laser cutting is great for making irregularly shaped flat metal parts (sometimes called "blanks"). You can also use laser cutting for regular shapes, but stamping is a more cost-effective process. We use programming software to "nest" parts on the sheet in the most efficient way to reduce cost and material waste
Which sheets can be laser cut?
Mild steel is the most common material for laser cut metal parts - but we can also laser cut galvanized steel/Zintec, stainless steel, aluminum, brass and bronze. We can process sheets up to 80mm thick on our 30,000 watt fiber laser
