Application of SUS303
SUS303 is used to process deep holes and complex-shaped parts that are difficult to machine with SUS304.
On the other hand, its corrosion resistance is not as good as SUS304, so it is not suitable for applications in contact with seawater or corrosive fluids.
Machinability of SUS303
In SUS303, MnS reduces the fracture energy of machined parts, thereby reducing cutting resistance and improving tool holding force.
In addition, SUS304 chips are difficult to split and are easily caught in the tool, while SUS303 is easy to split and it is easier to process deep holes.
SUS303 corresponds to austenitic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steels are corrosion resistant and can be welded by TIG welding and plasma welding. In addition, even in a high-temperature environment, there is little decrease in strength. Also, since austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic, it will hardly stick to magnets.
As a unique feature of SUS303, it has the same machinability as irons such as SS400 and S45C.
For example, SUS304, which is widely distributed in the market, has a band-like chip when cutting, which is easy to entangle with the blade. On the other hand, SUS303 contains a large amount of phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S), so chips discharged during cutting become finer. The finer the chips, the better they come out of the blade, the easier they are to clean, and the less risk of scoring or injuring the material being machined.
SUS303 is a material that is less likely to seize than SUS304. Aging is the phenomenon in which surfaces stick to each other when metals rub against each other and cannot be removed.
