Electrolytic Tinplate Coil JIS G3303 BA T3 2.8/2.8 Tin Coated Coils for Food Can Packaging
1. Introduction
Tinplate: commonly known as tinplate, has good sealing, preservation, light resistance, robustness, corrosion resistance, non-toxic and has a unique metal decorative charm, is widely used in food packaging industry such as cans, beverages, military, instruments, electrical appliances and other industries. Among them, in the field of packaging, it belongs to the international common packaging varieties. Tin plating is also one of the important consumption areas of tin, accounting for 30% of all consumption (2010 data).
Tin mill products include electrolytic tinplate, and electrolytic chromium coated steel (also referred to as tin free steel or TFS), and Black Plate. Tinplate is a thin steel sheet coated by tin, while TFS is an electrolytic chrome plated steel consisting of a thin layer of chromium and a layer of chromium oxide deposited on the steel base. The coating gives both of them a beautiful, metallic luster as well as excellent properties in corrosion resistance and paintability.
1. Properties
A. Tinplate is characterized by its thin gauge, which is between 0.13mm and 0.49mm.
B. Tinning of the tinplate is achieved in a continuous electrolytic process.
2. Advantages
In addition to thin gauge, the tinplate also boasts mechanical properties with a wide range from 230 to 620MPa. Hence, it suits the needs in multiple forming processes and various industries.
The tinplate is available in varied surface finishes, with three different levels of roughness.
Like other steel, tinplate is easy for recycling in line with environmental protection requirements.
Also, with high opacity, and excellent sealing property, tinplate provides ideal protection for food, beverage, and other substances when made into packaging containers.
The characteristics of tinplate are primarily influenced by the properties of tin itself.
Tin is a silver-white metal with a slight bluish tinge, having an atomic weight of 118.7 and a specific gravity of 7.28. It melts at 232°C and maintains its color in the atmosphere, displaying stable chemical properties. These qualities contribute to the enduring metallic luster of tinplate over time.
Due to its softness, tin ensures that the tin layer on tinplate remains intact without cracking or peeling during can manufacturing processes. This attribute is crucial for maintaining the integrity of food and beverage containers.
Tin compounds are non-toxic, ensuring that even when small amounts dissolve into food, they do not alter the food's color, taste, nutritional content, or pose health risks to consumers.
Tin also exhibits excellent brazing properties, facilitating the soldering of tin-plated steel and enhancing the ease of processing tinplate into cans and other containers.
The smooth, mirror-like surface of tinplate provides an ideal substrate for painting and printing processes, enabling vibrant and detailed designs to be applied effortlessly.
In summary, tin's unique characteristics not only preserve the appearance and functionality of tinplate but also ensure its suitability for a wide range of applications, particularly in food packaging and various industrial uses.
