What does oxo-biodegradable mean?
Oxo-biodegradable simply means that the plastic, at the end of its useful life, biodegrades through oxidation in the presence of oxygen, when exposed to heat or sunlight, hence the name oxo-biodegradable (oxo stemming from oxygen). Oxo-biodegradable plastic is made by blending a pro-degradant additive (such as EPI or D2W) into the plastic during the manufacturing process. The additive causes the molecular structure of plastic to break down when exposed to heat or sunlight with oxygen present.

What is oxidation?
Oxidation is a process in which a chemical substance changes because of the addition of oxygen.

Why is oxo-biodegradable plastic not compostable?
Products may only be classified as compostable if they biodegrade within 180 days (6 months) in a composting system, back into biomass, carbon dioxide and water. Any product which takes longer than 180 days to break down is not allowed to be classified as compostable.
