Routine preventive procedures for compressed air systems include:

• Discharge excess fluid daily from air compressors and tanks (if automatic drain valves are not used).
• Change the oil and filter at recommended intervals. The filter should be used for 1,000-2,000 hours and the oil for 4,000-8,000 hours. The oil filter should be checked frequently and replaced as soon as possible if there are signs of overloading or pressure drop.
• Replace the air filter regularly (depending on the use of the air compressor and the operating environment).
• Replace the air/oil separator annually or every 4,000-8,000 hours to reduce pressure drop and allow the air compressor to easily push compressed air out of the system. Older air/oil separators are not only inefficient, but can lead to excessive oil carrying, which can lead to a number of other problems.
• Inspect joints, bearings and moving parts for lubrication and reuse if necessary to prevent corrosion and wear.
• Check motor bearings frequently for signs of wear and corrosion and ensure that they are properly lubricated.
• Check belts for wear and make sure they have proper tension levels.
• Check and clean air intakes to prevent dirt from being drawn into the system.
• Check the air compressor for signs of oil or gas leakage.
• Check the pressure relief valve to make sure it is working properly and is not clogged or corroded.
• Inspect piping, hoses, hardware and tanks for integrity on a regular basis.
