Anodic Oxidation and Sandblasting
Anodizing aluminum alloys is done to improve corrosion resistance and to allow for staining (coloring), improved lubrication, or improved adhesion. However, anodizing does not increase the strength of the aluminum object. The anodized layer has insulating properties. When exposed to air or any other oxygen containing gas at room temperature, pure aluminum will self-passivate by forming a 2 to 3 nm thick amorphous aluminum oxide surface layer, providing very effective protection against corrosion. Aluminum alloys typically form a thicker oxide layer, 5 to 15 nanometers thick, but tend to be more susceptible to corrosion. Aluminum alloy parts are anodized to greatly increase the thickness of this layer for corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys can be significantly reduced by certain alloying elements or impurities: copper, iron and silicon, so 2000-, 4000-, 6000- and 7000-series alloys tend to be the most susceptible.
Sandblasting, sometimes referred to as abrasive blasting, is an operation in which a stream of abrasive material is forced against a surface under high pressure to smooth out a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface or remove surface contaminants. A pressurized fluid (usually compressed air) or a centrifugal wheel is used to propel the blasting material (often referred to as the media).
