Definition of Induction Motor

Induction Motor, also known as "asynchronous motor", is a device that places the rotor in a rotating magnetic field. Under the action of the rotating magnetic field, a rotational torque is obtained, so the rotor rotates.

Working principle of Induction Motor

Based on the magnetic field induction law and Lorentz force law. When the three-phase alternating current passes through the stator coil, a rotating magnetic field will be generated. The rotating magnetic field will pass through the air gap and be induced to the conductor bars in the rotor, thereby generating an induced electromotive force in the conductor bars, and the current in the conductor bars will also be generated. According to Lorentz's force law, an interaction force is generated between the current in the conductor and the rotating magnetic field, causing the rotor to generate torque and the rotor starts to rotate.

Structure of Induction Motor

The structure of the Induction Motor can be divided into two parts: the stator and the rotor, as well as ancillary parts such as end covers and fans. The stator is the fixed part of the motor, and the rotor is the rotating part of the motor. Because the stator of an asynchronous motor generates an excitation rotating field, absorbs electrical energy from the power supply, and generates and converts electrical energy into mechanical energy on the rotor through the rotating magnetic field, so unlike a DC motor, the stator of an AC motor is an armature. In addition, there must be a certain gap (called air gap) between the stator and the rotor to ensure that the rotor can rotate freely.

Advantages of Induction Motor

  • It is rugged and durable so that its operation is not affected by external environmental conditions.

  • They have high starting torque compared to synchronous motors.

  • Induction motors are self-starting. Therefore, unlike synchronous motors, no starting method is required.

  • Squirrel-cage induction motors require no commutator, brushes, and slip rings, which eliminates sparking problems and reduces overall motor costs.
