Multi-gate Doppler and 3D Spectrum Display
Introduction
Multi-gate Doppler is a patented Saset technology that
offers visualization of the velocity profile in the
velocity/depth plane and of the 3D spectrum with the
additional axis of axial depth.
The result offers never-before-seen information
regarding the hemodynamics of vessels, and
significantly improves the accuracy of volume flow
estimation.
Method
The method subdivides the axial gate into multiple
smaller sub-gates. Spectrum is computed for each subgate,
and the resulting velocity distribution may be
plotted in the velocity/axial distance axis as a velocity
profile. Additionally, the full 3D data, consisting of
velocity, time, and depth axes, is displayed.
As an example of the clinical significance, the central
collapse of the velocity profile after systole is related to
the elasticity of the vessel wall.
Improved volume flow estimation
The Doppler gate is widened to the entirety of the
vessel. By assuming radial symmetry, the volume flow
can be estimated from the numerous sub-gates.
This is an improvement over conventional single-gate
Doppler which assumes the velocity distribution is
laminar over the entirety of the gate, which is clearly
false.
We verify the increase in accuracy by flow phantom
experiments, using both conventional and multi-gate
Doppler to estimate volume flow.
