The desanders cone are sized from 6″ to 12″ for the drilling mud process. The most popular one is 10″. And cones are made of high-quality polyurethane since the high ability to resist abrasion. According to different flow rate demands, the desander will be configured with different numbers of cones.
The drilling fluids are pumped from the shaker tank by a centrifugal pump. Under the pressure and gravity effect, there will be a swirl in a cone. Then the centrifugal force pushes heavier material down to cone drop in Apex and light fluids flow out of the discharge line upside.

Besides oil drilling mud desander, there is desander used in the mud recycling systems. Such as HDD or piling, slurry separation or tunneling, and so on
Different use will request different size cones. Such as for piling, they may request a 14″ or larger cone. For HDD, especially for the smaller rigs, the system may request 6” or just desilter instead of desander
And even for the same use, there will be different configurations according to capacity. For example, ZJ40 may request a mud system circulation rate of around 200m³/h, while ZJ70 may request 360m³/h. So, the shakers, drilling fluids desander and other equipment holding the same flow rate will be configured in the system accordingly
1. 3 in 1 option: shale shaker, desander cyclone, and desilter cyclone make the whole equipment to be a 3 in 1. Desander cyclone works to separate solids 47-76 micron solids and desilter cyclone works to separate solids 15-25 micron solids. The separated solids will drop onto shale shaker screen which set on bottom to dry solids product by recycle drilling fluids back into mud tank. The 3 in 1 option is a popular option to minim footprint and maximize its performance result.
2. 2 in 1 option: shale shaker with desander cyclone make a whole 2 in 1 equipment only to separate solids 47-76 micron solids out and bottom shaker to dry solids discharge to minimum drilling fluids lost. This option will maximize its performance application by a big shale shaker but maximize its footprint too. Some clients will choose a mini shaker to make this option cost-effective.
3. Desander cyclone only to a minimum its cost, the solids separated from desander cyclone will be discharged directly by a collection hopper which will make more drilling fluids lost.
4. It’s hart to say which option is better only on specification, it will be depends on drilling condition, drilling mud requirement, budget requirement, etc. The most suitable option is the best option for clients.
