The diaphragm coupling consists of at least one diaphragm and two shaft sleeves. The diaphragm is pinned to the bushing generally without loosening or causing backlash between the diaphragm and bushing. Some manufacturers offer two-diaphragm models, while others provide three-diaphragm models with one or two rigid elements in the middle, which are then attached to the bushings on both sides.

The characteristics of the diaphragm coupling are similar to the bellows coupling. The collars transmit torque in the same way. The diaphragm itself is thin, so it flexes easily when relative displacement loads occur, so it can tolerate up to 1.5 degrees of deflection while producing low bearing loads in the servo.

Diaphragm coupling is often used in servo systems. Diaphragm has good torque rigidity but is slightly inferior to the bellows coupling.

On the other hand, the diaphragm coupling is very delicate and can be easily damaged if it is misused or improperly installed. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the deviation is within the bearing range of the standard coupling operation.
