How does lamination work for a transformer?
The reason laminations are used is in order to reduce as much as possible the eddy currents that are formed and flow inside the core as a much as possible. These currents flow in such a direction as to create a magnetic flux opposite to the flux created by the transformer’s winding. That being said, the greater the path they are allowed to travel inside the core, the more the joule losses increase (R*I^2) where R is the resistance of the core’s material and I is the eddy current.
So what we can do to address this loss factor is to reduce the path the currents are allowed to travel. We do that by insulating laminations of core material and make the core using them sandwitched tightly. This allows to have a core that allows magnetic flux to flow through it but greatly limits the eddy currents’ path and hence increases the efficiency of the transformer.
