O-ring is designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface. It is widely use for the function of fluid or gas sealing applications for machines.
Depends on different working environments, o-ring select different rubber material to ensure its peformance, list some commonly used material as below:
♦ NBR (Nitrile), a superior level of resistance against synthetic, good resist to fuel, oil and many acids, but poor ozone resistance, so do not recommend to exposure to air. A good compression set, normally used to oil sealing.
♦ FKM, FPM, an expensive rubber material, excellent fuel, oil resistance and low permeation, high chemical stability. Withstands high temperature and heat-aging. Normal FKM is poor low temp. resistance. Special types of FKM can maintain flexible at −40 °C. A preferred choice for oil and fuel sealing and high temp. working sealing such as O-rings.
♦ CR (Neoprene), moderately resistant to both petroleum oils and weather (ozone, UV, oxygen), good resilience and abrasion, moderate water resistance and poor solvent resistance. A excellent compression set, normally used to air sealing.
♦ HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile), better oil and chemical resistance than nitrile rubbers, can withstand much higher temperatures. Excellent resistance to oils and fuels, also resist to heat (steam / hot water) and ozone. An excellent range of performance at a cost between nitrile rubber (NBR) and fluoroelastomers (FMK).
