6XXX uses magnesium and silicon as the main alloying elements.

Strength: A moderately high strength grade of T651 is obtained by heat treatment, providing higher strength than 5XXX series alloys.

Machinability: 6XXX alloy plate is easier to process than 5XXX alloy in T651 condition.

Formability: 6XXX sheet alloys can form T651 state during cold treatment, or form T451 state after tempering. T451 has higher formability than T651 temper.

Corrosion resistance: 6XXX series alloy, T651/T652/T6 state, has good corrosion resistance. Compared to 5XXX alloys, 6XXX still exhibits excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to high temperature environments.

Weldability: 6XXX is easy to weld and can act as a suitable filler whether in the case of GTA-W or GMA-W. In the heat affected zone, the tensile strength of the weld can be reduced to 165-200 MPa. In special cases, post-weld heat treatment can restore some of the lost strength.
