Aluminum Electroless Plating

First, the principle of chemical plating

Electroless plating is a plating method in which metal ions are reduced and deposited on the surface of parts by the redox effect of reducing agents in the same solution when no current is passed (no external power). Therefore, electroless plating can be described as a controllable, autocatalytic chemical reduction process for metal deposition. The general reaction formula is:

Second, the characteristics of chemical plating

With the development of industry, electroless plating has become a promising process technology. Compared with other plating methods, electroless plating has the following characteristics:

1) Metal plating can be done on parts made of various materials such as metals, semiconductors and non-conductors.

2) No matter how complex the geometry of the part is, a coating of uniform thickness can be obtained wherever the solution is accessible.

3) For autocatalytic electroless plating, a larger thickness of the coating can be obtained, and even electroforming is possible.

4) No current required.

5) The coating is dense and has few pores.

6) Coatings often have special chemical and mechanical properties.

Due to the many advantages of electroless plating, electroless plating is becoming more and more popular in the industry and the electronics industry is developing rapidly. The following is an introduction to electroless nickel plating as an example:

1) Electroless nickel plating uses sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent, so the generally obtained coating is a nickel-phosphorus alloy. According to the phosphorus content, it can be divided into low phosphorus (1%-4%), medium phosphorus (4%-10%) and high phosphorus (10%-12%). Coatings with different phosphorus contents can be obtained from baths with different pH values. When pH=4-5, medium phosphorus and high phosphorus alloys can be obtained. Low-phosphorus and medium-phosphorus alloys can be obtained from weak alkaline solution PH=8-10. NI-P alloys containing more than 8% phosphorus are amorphous coatings, which have excellent corrosion resistance because they have no grain boundaries. After heat treatment at 300-400 degrees, the hardness can reach HV=1150 when it becomes a mixture of amorphous and crystalline states. After chemical plating, the hardness is close to that of hard chromium. Good plating type for plating (suitable for all aluminum and aluminum alloy products, including forging, die casting, aluminum profiles, etc.). Disadvantages: The plating seed is brittle, but the plasticity of the product after heat treatment is greatly improved. (Generally, after four hours of heat treatment at 400 degrees or more, its plasticity is much improved)

2) Process flow of electroless nickel plating on aluminum:

Ultrasonic oil removal—>Oxidation film removal—>First zinc replacement—>Harmonization—>Second zinc replacement—>Electroless nickel plating—>Passivation—>Ultrasonic cleaning—>Baking—>Full inspection—>Packaging

3) Removal of unqualified coating:

Steel, aluminum, copper, plastic and other chemical nickel layers can be removed with concentrated nitric acid. However, the parts should be dried and put into the tank. If the water is brought in, the base metal will be corroded. The working temperature is below 35 degrees.

4) Quality requirements:

a. The film thickness is in the range of 5-30um

b. The salt spray test has reached more than 24 hours, and it has reached the CNS standard level 9 or more.

c, through 60 degree bending test, no peeling phenomenon

d. The appearance is free from bruises, scratches, water marks and other undesirable phenomena.

e. The film layer is uniform, and there should be no fog, white spots, and exposed plating.

Q: What is the thickness of the anodizing? Can you do 12um?
A: Our normal thickness is about 10 um. Yes, we can do 15 microns and above.

Q: What colors can powder coatings be used for? The thickness of the powder coat?
A: We can do any color for powder coating as long as you can provide color samples. Our usual powder coating thickness is 60-80um.
