A new method for the maintenance of resettable circuits of lithium-ion batteries is introduced
The rapid rise in the use of high-rate discharge lithium-ion batteries has created a need for cost-effective circuit maintenance equipment capable of supplying up to 30A+ of continuous current at DC voltages up to 30V. In order to meet this need, a mixing device was developed that connected the bimetal retainer in parallel with the polymer positive temperature coefficient device. The resulting MHP (MetalHybridPPTC) device can provide a reconfigurable overcurrent maintenance function and the low impedance characteristics of the PPTC device to prevent arcing of the bimetal retainer at high currents.
Figure 1 shows the shape and size of a 30A rated holding current MHP device, which is the same size as a typical bimetal retainer and is rated at only 15A. In addition, one side of the unit is arranged at a flat angle, so it can fit tightly between lithium-ion batteries with a battery pack diameter of 18 mm.
MHP circuit maintenance equipment provides battery planners and manufacturers with a way to optimize space, reduce costs, and improve safety, and can be used in a variety of applications. Devices with higher voltages and continuous currents are being developed, and future planning considerations include battery maintenance for cordless power tools, e-bikes, scooters, light electric vehicles (LEVs), lithium-ion battery packs for backup power, and non-battery applications such as motor maintenance.
