The difference between resin buttons and plastic buttons:
The terms "resin button" and "plastic button" are often interchangeably used, and sometimes cause confusion for those who don't know the difference.
The difference between resin and plastic:
One of the most common misconceptions about resins and plastics is that resin is a form of plastic material. In fact, the opposite is true. Plastic is a form of resin.
The main difference between the two is the source: we describe the resin as a compound derived from plants, so it is all natural. Resins are usually transparent, pale yellow in color and highly adhesive. In its initial form, resin is a volatile liquid, but when processed it hardens into a transparent solid material.
Plastic, on the other hand, is a synthetic compound, so we can actually call plastic a synthetic resin. In general, plastics are made from petrochemicals combined with natural materials. We can further divide plastics into several different subcategories, such as acrylic, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, etc. There is also a class of plastic materials, mostly made from renewable plant materials, called bioplastics.
The difference between resin buttons and plastic buttons:
In addition to the differences in raw materials, as we discussed earlier, another key difference between resin buttons and plastic buttons is their manufacturing process.
As we have already discussed, the raw material of the resin is liquid, so the liquid material has to be heated, cooled, solidified, cut, etc. These processes are carried out through the cavity. Another commonly used manufacturing process is to coat the surface of the roller with liquid resin and then cure it. The solid resin is then shaped and pressed into the desired shape, as well as other subsequent processes.
Plastic buttons, on the other hand, are made from solid matter and go through an injection molding process.
Because of these different manufacturing processes, the resin button surface looks cleaner and brighter. They are also thicker and heavier, making them better suited for a variety of applications. The advantage of plastic buttons, however, is that the molding process is easier, so they can be molded into a wide variety of shapes. This also makes the plastic buttons easier to electroplate.
