Description
Ferrotitanium is used in steelmaking as a deoxidizer, degasser, and carbon-sulfur stabilizer. It is used for titanium deoxidation in the production of calm steel, which can reduce the segregation at the top of the ingot, improve the quality of the steel, and increase the yield of the ingots.
The titanium and nitrogen dissolved in the steel can combine to form stable titanium nitride, which can eliminate the adverse effects of nitrogen on the properties of the steel. Titanium reacts with sulfur in the steel to form titanium sulfide, which can prevent the formation of iron sulfide that causes hot shortness. Titanium reacts with carbon to form extremely stable titanium carbide, and the titanium carbide particles can prevent the growth of steel grains, refine the structure of the steel, and improve its strength.
The chemical affinity of titanium for carbon is greater than that of chromium for carbon; therefore, adding ferrotitanium to stainless steel to fix carbon can eliminate the dilution phenomenon of chromium at the grain boundaries of stainless steel, improving its corrosion resistance. In recent years, titanium has been used as a microalloying element in the production of high-strength low-alloy steel. Adding titanium to cast iron helps to form fine silicon carbide, and it also plays a role in degassing, inoculating, purifying, and refining the structure of castings, improving their wear resistance.
Adding titanium to heat-resistant cast iron can enhance its heat resistance. Moreover, titanium-containing composite alloys are used as additives in the production of high-temperature alloys and aluminum alloys. Using ferrotitanium as a component of the flux can improve the welding quality of welding rods.
