Description:
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a semiconductor compound consisting of silicon (Si) and carbon (C) and belongs to the family of wide bandgap (WBG) materials. Its physical bond is very strong, giving the semiconductor high mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. The wide bandgap and high thermal stability allow SiC devices to be used at higher junction temperatures than silicon, even exceeding 200°C. The main advantage of SiC in power applications is its low drift region resistance, which is a key factor for high-voltage power devices.
Thanks to its excellent physical and electronic properties, power devices based on SiC are driving a radical revolution in power electronics. Although this material has been known for a long time, its use as a semiconductor is relatively new, largely due to the availability of large and high-quality wafers. In recent decades, efforts have focused on the development of specific and unique high-temperature crystal growth processes. Although SiC has different polymorphic crystal structures (also called polytypes), the 4H-SiC polytype hexagonal crystal structure is best suited for high-power applications.
