Introductions of EPON ONU
Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is a new type of optical access network technology, which uses point to multipoint structure and passive optical fiber transmission to provide variety service on Ethernet. It uses PON technology in physical layer and using Ethernet protocol in link layer, it also use the PON topology to achieve Ethernet access. Therefore, it combines the advantages of PON technology and Ethernet technology, so EPON solution is with low cost, high bandwidth, strong scalability, it can reorganize different service flexibly and fast, and it also complies with existing Ethernet and convenient for management, etc..
ONU is a necessary part of EPON, a typical EPON system includes OLT, ONU and ODN.Optical Line Terminal is always located in Center Office and Optical Network Unit is near the terminal device or integrated with the terminal device. ONU and OLT will be connected via fiber. ONU has different application according to its position in the system like Fiber To the Cab, Fiber To The Building, Fiber To The Office and so on.
EPON is able to provide Ethernet, IP, Voice, TDM and CATV service and as an access equipment in EPON, ONU is able finish the below tasks:
1, Receiving ( Selective ) broadcasting data from OLT.
2, Response command of registration and ranging from OLT.
3, Cache user’s Ethernet data, report cache queue to OLT and send cached data in the uplink transmitting window which is distributed by OLT.
4, Executive corresponding OAM function according to the OAM frame from the OLT.
5, Other function of Ethernet.
