HYDAC diaphragm accumulators utilize the compressibility of a gas (nitrogen) in storing hydraulic energy. The gas is necessary because fluids are unable to store energy on their own due to their low compressibility. The dihaphragm serves to separate the gas and fluid sides of the accumulator.
The diaphragm accumulator works by drawing in fluid from the hydraulic circuit when the pressure increases. This compresses the gas and stores the energy. Then, when the pressure decreases, the gas expands and returns the energy back to the circuit.
To prevent the diaphragm from being pushed out through the fluid port, a poppet is incorporated into the design.
HYDAC produces two types of diaphragm accumulators: welded (non-repairable) and threaded (repairable). These are commonly used in industrial and mobile applications for storing energy, maintaining pressure, compensating for leakage, and powering vehicle hydraulic systems (such as brakes and suspension).
