Details of 7xxx series alloy applied on the aerospace:
Aluminum alloy is used as aircraft material at early time. In the 1960s-1970s, 7xxx alloys often used T73 and T76 heat treatment system. But now, alloy 7050 and high purity alloy are often used. 7075 aluminum sheet belongs to the ultra-hard aluminum of Al - zinc - Mg – Cu. In the end of 1940s, alloy 7075 has been applied to aircraft manufacturing industry and is still widely used in aviation industry as deforming aluminum alloy of super high idensity. Its characteristic is that after solid solution treatment, the plasticity is remarkable and after heat treatment, the reinforcement effect is very obvious. Besides, if under 150 ℃, alloy 7075 has high intensity and the low temperature intensity is especially outstanding. However, it also has few shortages, like poor welding performance as well as the tendency of stress corrosion and cracking. The protective measures of covering a piece of aluminum on the surface and other schemes are essential to be taken. Two-stage aging can improve the ability of alloy to resist stress corrosion and cracking. Under the condition of annealing and quenching, the plasticity of 7050 is slightly inferior to the same state of 2A12 and is slightly superior to that of 7A04. The stress corrosion performance of alloy 7075 is better than that of 7A04 and among them, alloy 7075 T651 is top grade, which is honored as the most excellent products in aluminum alloy. The high intensity of 7075 is far more than mild steel. Most importantly, this alloy has good mechanical properties and anodizing reaction. It is a typical aircraft aluminum.
Characteristics of Aircraft Aluminum Sheet 7050:
7075- 0
Un-heat-treated 7075 (7075-0 temper) has maximum tensile strength no more than 280 MPa (40,000 psi), and maximum yield strength no more than 140 MPa (21,000 psi).
The material has an elongation (stretch before ultimate failure) of 9–10%. 7075-0 is highly corrosion-resistant combined with generally acceptable strength profile.
