Description

ASTM A684 1045 Cold Rolled High Carbon Steel Strip

We stock a large range of carbon steels which can be slit to the customers requirement. We also have a wide range of excess offcuts which may be of interest.

High Carbon Steel Strip can be produced to a large variety of tensile strengths/hardnesses to suit the subsequent component-manufacturing processes and end-uses involved. The softened/annealed condition provides maximum deformability for more complex component shapes or, alternatively, lower relative wear on component-forming tools. In this condition hardnesses of 160 - 200 VPN (equivalent to tensile strength up to about 690 N/mm²) would be typical.

Manufacture

Condition:

1 The strip shall be furnished cold rolled spheroidized annealed, soft annealed, intermediate hardness, or full hard, as specified.

2 Intermediate hardness may be obtained by either rolling the strip after final annealing or by varying the annealing treatment, or both.

3 Pinch Pass一Spheroidized annealed and annealed material may be pinch rolled after the final anneal to improve flatness, uniformly oil, modify surface, obtain proper mechanical properties, and minimize stretcher strains if required by the purchaser.

Heat Treatment

1 Soft spheroidized annealed high-carbon steel is intended for applications requiring maximum cold forming. It is normally produced to give the lowest maximum Rockwell hardness for each grade.

2 Soft annealed high-carbon steel is intended for applications requiring moderate cold forming. It is produced to a maximum Rockwell hardness.

3 Intermediate hardness high-carbon steel is intended for applications where cold forming is slight or a stiff, springy product is needed, or both. It is produced to specified Rockwell hardness ranges, the maximum being higher than obtained for the annealed type.

4 Full hard high-carbon steel is intended for flat applications. It is produced to minimum Rockwell hardness requirements, which vary with grade, microstructure and gauge. Full hard can be produced with either a pearlitic or spheroidized microstructure or a mixture of both. The minimum hardness should be established between the consumer and the producer.

Surface Finish

Surface—The strip shall be furnished with a No. 2 Regular Bright or No. 1 Matte (Dull) finish, as specified.

Oiling—The strip shall be furnished oiled or dry, as specified.

Introduce

AISI 1045 is defined as medium carbon steel which has 0.43%-0.5% Carbon.It offers good weldability, good machinability, high strength and impact properties,but low in hardenability because of lack of suitable alloying elements,but it can obtain surface hardnesses 54-60HRC after flame or induction hardening.

1045 is a medium tensile low hardenability carbon steel generally supplied in the black hot rolled or occasionally in the normalised condition, with a typical tensile strength range 570 - 700 Mpa and Brinell hardness range 170 - 210 in either condition. Characterised by fairly good strength and impact properties, plus good machinability and reasonable weldability

AISI 1045 steel has good machinability in a normalized or hot-rolled condition. Based on the recommendations given by the machine manufacturers, operations like tapping, milling, broaching, drilling, turning and sawing can be carried out on AISI 1045 steel using suitable feeds, tool type, and speeds.
