Cone Power Transmission Gears Of Intersecting Axes Front And Rear Wheel Drive Parts
Bevel gears are a specific category of gears that are distinguished by their conically shaped tooth-bearing surfaces. These gears are designed to transmit motion and power between two shafts that intersect at a specific angle, rather than being parallel or co-axial like spur or helical gears. The unique conical shape of bevel gears allows them to mesh efficiently where the axes of the shafts meet.
In most applications, bevel gears are mounted on shafts that are positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other. This orientation enables power to be transferred between the shafts perpendicularly, which is a common requirement in various mechanical systems. However, bevel gears are not limited to 90 degrees; they can be designed to work at other angles as well, depending on the specific requirements of the machinery or system they are being used in.
The pitch surface of a bevel gear, which is the surface where the teeth are located, is conical. This conical shape ensures that the gear teeth make proper contact with the mating gear, allowing for smooth and efficient power transmission. The teeth of a bevel gear are cut along the surface of a right circular cone, giving the gear its distinctive shape.
When two bevel gears are meshing, the imaginary vertices of their conical pitch surfaces must coincide at a single point. This is the point where the shaft axes of the two gears intersect. At this intersection, the shaft axes form an arbitrary non-straight angle, which can be any angle except for zero or 180 degrees, as these angles would imply that the gears are aligned in a straight line, which is not the case for bevel gears.
A specific type of bevel gear is the miter gear, which is a standardized form of bevel gear. Miter gears are characterized by having an equal number of teeth and by being mounted on shafts that are at a 90-degree angle to each other. This standardization simplifies the design and manufacturing process, making miter gears commonly used in applications where precise 90-degree shaft intersection is required, such as in woodworking machinery, metalworking equipment, and various industrial power transmission systems.
