The triplet-type loupe is essential because it has been made specially to correct two problems other types of magnifiers have-the presence of traces of color(chromatic aberration) normally found at the outer edges of the lens; and visual distortion(spherical aberration), also usually at the outer edges of the lens.

Correction for visual distortion is the triplet-type creates what we call flatness of field.If we were to look at a gem with a magnifier that was not a triplet-type,any flaw seen at an outer edge of the magnifying lens would be distorted,more or less so depending on how close the flaw is to the edge of viewing lens.
