Awareness of what I use in my kitchen as far as potential toxins goes is very important to me. This carafe is borosilicate glass which is the best trade off, to me, in glass formulations. It is the same type of glass used in chemistry labs. True it will shatter more thoroughly than soda-lime glass but it is more tolerant of changes in temperature. It is a trade-off. I love this pitcher! I've been using it to make sure that I drink enough water during the day.

I have started infusing water with fresh fruit and the mesh and wire strainer are great for keeping the fruit bits from pouring into my glass. The pitcher is glass and feels sturdy...even though it also feels a little dainty. The lid fits well and does not leak. Finally a pitcher that can accommodate hot water to brew tea and is attractive. Surprises you as it is very light considering what it can do. I, personally, am very careful not to bump it--don't want to create "stress fracture" points. It is sturdier than it appears, though. I really like this pitcher. The strainer is a very nice touch.
