Many of these systems are currently based on diesel gensets, given their relatively low capital costs, operational flexibility, and controllability. However, diesel fuel is expensive and, in many of these locations, difficult and expensive to get to site. The cost of diesel genset electricity is, therefore, generally considerably higher than electricity from large-scale grids, although less than for stand-alone systems.
