Fe-CuNi Type J Thermocouple Extension Wire for Versatile in Various Industrial and Scientific Applications
Type J thermocouples have a standardized temperature range of -180°C to +700°C.They are also specified to operate from -40°C to +750°C with a limiting deviation of ±1.5°C or 0.40% in Class 1. The positive leg (Fe) is made of 99.5% iron with traces of manganese and copper, while the negative leg (CuNi) consists of approximately 55% copper and 45% nickel, with minor amounts of cobalt, iron, and manganese. The conductor cross-section is 0.22 mm², and the outer diameter is approximately 3.4 mm. The minimum bending radius is 7.5 times the diameter. The insulation is rated for fixed laying from -40°C to +180°C, flexible application from -25°C to +180°C, and short-term use up to +250°C. The cable is halogen-free and complies with fire performance standards, being flame retardant and self-extinguishing.
According to international standards, Type J extension wire is identified with black/white (black sheath) color coding, with the black color representing the positive iron (Fe) wire and white for the negative copper-nickel (CuNi) wire. Type J thermocouples are suitable for high-temperature applications in vacuum, oxidizing, reducing, or inert atmospheres. They are recommended for use up to 750°C due to the embrittlement of iron at higher temperatures.
color codes of thermocouple ( J type )
The operating temperature range of type J thermocouple is -210~1200℃ , but it is usually used in the temperature range 0~750℃ due to embrittlement of Iron.
Type J thermocouple has good resistance to oxidation and high EMF output against Platinum 67, with good temperature accuracy, sensitivity and stability. It is recommended for vacuum, oxidizing, reducing or inert atmospheres, but it can not be used in sulphurous atmosphere above 500℃ .

Type J thermocouples have a standardized temperature range of -180°C to +700°C. They can operate from -40°C to +750°C with a limiting deviation of ±1.5°C or 0.40% in Class 1, and from -40°C to +750°C with a limiting deviation of ±2.5°C or 0.75% in Class 2.
- The positive leg (Fe) is made of 99.5% iron, approximately 0.25% manganese, and approximately 0.12% copper, with the rest being other impurities.
- The negative leg (CuNi) consists of 55% copper, 45% nickel, and approximately 0.1% cobalt, iron, and manganese.
Type J thermocouples are suitable for high-temperature applications in vacuum, oxidizing, reducing, or inert atmospheres. They have good resistance to oxidation and high EMF output against Platinum 67, with good temperature accuracy, sensitivity, and stability.
Extension wires for Type J thermocouples are designed to maintain the temperature range of -50°C to +350°C. They are made with a glass fibre insulation, a sheath material of Besilen® EM9, and are braided with fibre-glass with a tracer. The conductor cross-section is 0.22 mm², and the outer diameter is approximately 3.4 mm.
The minimum bending radius for the extension wire is 7.5 times the diameter (7.5 x d). The temperature range for insulation is -40°C to +180°C for fixed laying, -25°C to +180°C for flexible application, and short-term use up to +250°C. The wire is halogen-free and complies with various international standards including RoHS directive for the absence of harmful substances.
Type J extension wires can be customized with different lengths and connectors to suit specific application needs.
