1. Expansion joints(compensators)
Introduction to Expansion Joints (Compensators)
Expansion joints, also known as compensators, are flexible structures comprising elastic bellows as their primary working element. They are equipped with connectors, supports, flanges, conduits, and additional accessories. Installed on vessel shells or pipelines, these joints effectively compensate for the additional stresses caused by temperature fluctuations and mechanical vibrations. By harnessing the bellows' expansion and contraction, they adjust to dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, and vessels due to thermal expansion and contraction. Additionally, they account for axial, lateral, and angular displacements. Their applications extend to noise and vibration reduction, as well as heating supply systems.
To mitigate deformation or damage to heating pipelines resulting from thermal expansion or temperature stress, compensators are installed to balance these expansions, thereby reducing stress on pipeline walls and minimizing forces acting on valves or support structures.
Boasting reliable operation, excellent performance, and a compact design, expansion joints are extensively used in industries such as chemical engineering, metallurgy, and nuclear energy. Among the various vessel expansion joint forms, the U-shaped design prevails, followed by Ω-shaped and C-shaped joints. Pipeline expansion joints are categorized based on structural compensation methods, including universal, pressure balanced, hinged, and gimbal expansion joints.
Main Item | Classification | Description |
Metal Expansion Joint | ElbowExpansion Joint | Bend the pipe into a U-shaped or other shape, also known as tension bends, are a type of expansion joint that utilizes the elastic deformation ability of the form to compensate. Its advantages are good strength, long service life, and on-site production. The disadvantages are space-consuming, high steel consumption, and high friction resistance. This type of expansion joint is widely used in various steam piping and long pipes. |
Bellows Expansion Joint
| Bellows expansion joints, crafted from metal bellows, offer axial expansion and contraction along with slight bending capacity. Protective rods or rings prevent overextension, while guide supports ensure stability. Angular and lateral variants compensate for rotational and lateral deformations. Benefits include space and material efficiency, ease of standardization, and mass production. Yet, they have a limited lifespan. Typically suited for short, low-temperature, low-pressure pipelines, advancements in production technology widen their applications. Presently, they're viable up to 6.0 MPa pressure in pipe systems. | |
Slip-Type Expansion Joint | The slip-type expansion joint features inner and outer sleeves allowing axial movement, sealed with stuffing box. It maintains pipe ends on the same axis during use and comprises sleeves, shells, and sealing materials. Used to compensate axial expansion and rotation in pipelines at any angle, it's compact yet offers significant compensation, suitable for hot water, steam, and grease media. It compensates thermal expansion by sliding the sleeve against the outer one, employing a high-performance self-sealing dynamic seal. With synthetic materials, it withstands high temperatures, corrosion, and aging, with a temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees Celsius, extending to 350 degrees Celsius in special cases. Ensuring axial sliding and preventing medium leakage, it's a versatile solution for pipe systems. | |
Non-metallic Expansion Joint | Rubber Expansion Joint | Composed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection. |
Fabric Expansion Joint | The fabric expansion joint is mainly made of fiber fabric, rubber, and other high temperature resistant materials. It can compensate for the vibration and deformation of fans and ducts.Fabric expansion joints can compensate for axial, lateral, and angular products, with features such as no thrust, simplified support design, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, noise reduction, vibration reduction, and others. It is particularly suitable for hot blast pipes and smoke and dust pipeline of power plant. The non-metallic compensator's fiber fabric and insulation cotton itself have the functions of sound absorption and vibration isolation, therefore they can effectively reducing the noise and vibration of boiler, fan, and other systems. Simple structure, light weight, and easy maintenance. |
