How to use a nebulizer

If you have asthma, you may not need to use a nebulizer. You may use an inhaler instead, which is usually just as effective. But a nebulizer can deliver medicine with less effort than an inhaler. You and your provider can decide if a nebulizer is the best way to get the medicine you need. The choice of device may be based on whether you find a nebulizer easier to use and what type of medicine you take.

How do I clean and care for it?

Since you are breathing vapor from your nebulizer, it has to be clean. If the machine is not cleaned correctly, bacteria and other germs could grow inside it.

Your doctor will give you detailed directions on how to clean and care for your machine, but generally:

· Your nebulizer should be cleaned using hot, soapy water after each use.

· It should be disinfected once a week.

· It should be air-dried on a paper towel or clean cloth.

Since it is not possible to completely clean the inside of the tubing, it should be replaced regularly. Your healthcare professional should explain how often you need to change the tubing.

Daily cleaning

Take off the mouthpiece/mask and remove the medication container.

Wash these parts with hot water and mild liquid dish soap.

Shake off the extra water.

Let these pieces air dry on a clean piece of paper towel or dish towel.

Disinfecting

Take off the detachable parts (mouthpiece and medication container).

Soak them in the solution provided by your doctor or one part white vinegar and three parts hot water.

Let these parts soak for 1 hour or as long as listed in the instructions.

Remove the parts and let them air dry.

Storage tips

Once the parts have been cleaned and dried, store them in an airtight plastic container or bag.

Keep in a cool, dry area.
Make sure to keep your nebulizer free of dust.

The basic steps to set up and use your nebulizer are as follows:

Wash your hands.

Connect the hose to an air compressor.

Fill the medicine cup with your medicine. To avoid spills, close the medicine cup tightly and always hold the mouthpiece straight up and down.

Attach the hose and mouthpiece to the medicine cup.

Place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Keep your lips firmly around the mouthpiece so that all of the medicine goes into your lungs.

Breathe through your mouth until all the medicine is used. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. If needed, use a nose clip so that you breathe only through your mouth. Small children usually do better if they wear a mask.

Turn off the machine when done.

Wash the medicine cup and mouthpiece with water and air dry until your next treatment
