Hot melt adhesives (also called hot glues) are typically 100% solids formulations (no water or solvents involved) based on thermoplastic polymers. Hot melt adhesives are sold in a solid state at room temperature and are "activated" when heated to their flex softening point (usually between 50 and 160 degrees). Once melted (in a hot melt pot), the adhesive can then be applied to the substrate in its liquefied or molten state. The hot melt wets the substrate, penetrates the surface (and any cavities), and then solidifies, ensuring cohesion. This setup/cooling process takes very little time. Glues that cool and stay tacky are known as pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) -- we'll get to those in depth later.
