4. Feature
It's characterized by good strength, hardenability and toughness, and it has high creep strength and long lasting strength under the high temperature.
5.Appliation
It's used to manufacture forgings that require higher strength and larger quenched and tempered section than 35CrMo steel, such as large gears for locomotive traction, supercharger transmission gears, rear axles, connecting rods and spring clamps that are heavily loaded. It can also be used for drill pipe joints and fishing tools for oil deep wells below 2000m.
6. Hardness
For anneal, the hardness is less than 217HB.
For Q+T, the hardness is 28-32HRC.
7.Heat Treatment
When forging, firstly preheat the steel carefully, then raise the temperature to 1150-1200°C for forging. Do not forge below 850°C.
When annealing, firstly heat the AISI 4140 slowly to 800-850°C and allow enough time for the steel to be thoroughly heated, then cool slowly in the furnace to 480°C followed by air cooling.
