A Pelton turbine, also known as a free jet turbine or Pelton impeller, is a type of impulsive turbine.
Water passes through the nozzles and hits a spoon-shaped bucket or cup arranged around the periphery of the wheel, causing the wheel to spin and generate mechanical energy. The runner is fixed on the shaft through which the rotational motion of the turbine is transmitted to the generator.
Impulse turbines are the best choice for high head and low flow hydraulic resources. They are compact, small, efficient and require less investment. They are divided into Turgo type and Pelton type.
The impulse turbine has a water head between 80 and 1,000 meters, a capacity between 200 kW and 20 MW, and a runner diameter between 0.55 and 2.3 meters. Their axis arrangement is vertical or horizontal and they can have single, double or multiple nozzles.
