Mixed flow turbine Also known as the Francis turbine, it is a type of counter-turbine, invented by American engineer Francis in 1849, also known as the Francis turbine, or the spoke-shaft turbine. The water flows radially from the periphery into the runner and then flows out of the runner approximately axially. The runner consists of the upper crown, the lower ring and the blades. The development trend in recent years is high head, large capacity, high specific speed and high efficiency.
The Francis turbine is compact and efficient, and can adapt to a wide range of water heads. It is one of the most widely used turbine types in the world. When water flows through such a turbine wheel, it enters in a radial direction and flows out axially, so it is also called a radial axial flow turbine.

The Francis turbine has a simple structure, and the main components include a volute, a seat ring, a water guiding mechanism, a top cover, a runner, a main shaft, a guide bearing (see a turbine guide bearing), a bottom ring, a draft tube, and the like. The volute is a water-conducting component, which is shaped like a snail shell and is generally made of a metal material with a circular cross section. The seat ring is placed between the volute and the guide vane, and is composed of an upper ring, a lower ring and a plurality of columns, and is directly connected with the volute; the column is wing-shaped and cannot be rotated, and is also called a fixed guide vane. The water guiding mechanism is composed of a movable guide vane, a speed regulating ring, a crank arm, a connecting rod and the like. The runner is directly connected to the main shaft (see the main shaft of the turbine) and is a rotating part of the turbine. The runner consists of an upper crown, a lower ring, a drain cone and a number of fixed blades. The shape and the fit of each component are based on The head used varies. The draft tube is a turbine draining component that directs the flow of water from the outlet of the runner to the downstream, generally elbow-shaped, and the small turbine is usually a straight-conical draft tube.
