So how does induction heating work? An alternating electrical current is applied to the primary of a transformer. This creates an alternating magnetic field, and according to Faraday’s Law, an electric current will be induced if the secondary of the transformer is located within this magnetic field.
A basic induction heating setup involves a power supply sending an AC current through an inductor (usually a copper coil), with the part to be heated (the workpiece) placed inside the inductor. The inductor serves as the transformer primary, and the part to be heated becomes a short circuit secondary. When metal is placed inside the inductor and enters the magnetic field, circulating eddy currents are induced within the part.
