Audio transformer is used as a component of circuits such as voltage amplification and power output in radio communication, radio and television, and automatic control. The frequency response of the audio transformer is uniform in the working frequency band. The core is made of high magnetic permeability materials. The primary and secondary windings are closely coupled, so that the magnetic flux passing through the primary winding is almost all linked with the secondary winding, and the coupling coefficient is close to 1. The lowest frequency of the passband is determined by the primary winding inductance, and the highest frequency is determined by the transformer leakage inductance. To ensure that the transformer has enough passband, the primary winding inductance should be large and the leakage inductance should be small. The hysteresis loss of the iron core and the saturation of the magnetic circuit can cause signal distortion. Properly configuring the load and increasing the load current can reduce the influence of hysteresis loss; increasing the core section and leaving an air gap can prevent the magnetic circuit from being saturated, which can reduce the distortion of the signal.
Audio transformers can be divided into 3 categories according to their position in the electronic circuit.
1.Connected between the output circuit and the load is called the output transformer;
2.Connected between the signal source and the amplifier input is called the input transformer;
3.Connected between the output circuit of the previous stage and the input circuit of the next stage is called an interstage transformer.
Audio transformers can implement voltage transformer conversion like power transformers, and can also implement audio signal coupling.
The role of the audio transformer:
1. Audio signal coupling;
2. Realize the impedance matching of the front and rear stages;
3. Isolation of the front and rear DC power supply circuits.
Generally, the first two functions are commonly used. Due to the characteristics of the audio transformer itself, it is generally not used in high-quality audio amplifiers, but in circuits that do not require high sound quality, such as amplifier circuits and early electronic tubes, transistor radios and other circuits.
When using it, it is necessary to understand the requirements of the circuit for the audio transformer. For example, the input end of the class A and B power amplifier circuit of the early transistor radio is required to complete the phase inversion of the two half-waves of the audio signal, so as to power amplify the two half-waves respectively. This is the input transformer; at the output, the two half-waves are synthesized and fed to the speaker, which is the output transformer.
No matter which effect is achieved, the effect of the transformer to reflect (convert) the input impedance of the rear stage to the front stage must be considered. When all these are considered, a suitable transformer can be selected or made to realize the function of the circuit.
