The type 6B blind flanges are fully conformed to API 6A and made of modern alloy steel forging via advanced manufacturing techniques. They are robust and high cost performance. 6B blind flanges are of the ring joint type and are not designed for face-to-face make-up. The connection make-up bolting force reacts on the metallic ring gasket. The API6A Blind Flange with no opening or center bore, normally used to close-off completely an unused line or connection; the ends of a piping system, or pressure vessel. After being sealed, and re-opened, the Blind flange permits easy access to the interior of a line or vessel. Downstream, a modification of a blind flange – Target flange (with a counter bore filled with lead) – is used to cushion and reduce the erosive effect of high velocity abrasive fluid. Though there has been caution in using lead, as a problem can occur if the lead filling in the cavity escapes the cavity and moves into the flow bore blocking the flow.
