Ferric ammonium citrate, also known as ferric ammonium citrate, has the molecular formula (NH4)xFey(C6H4O7)z, and is green to brown. The iron content of green salt is 14.5~16.0%, and the iron content of brown salt is 16.5~22.5%. It is odorless or has a slight ammonia smell, and is in the form of flakes, granules or powder.
Ferric ammonium citrate is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is neutral. It is easily deliquescent in the air, unstable to light, reduced to ferrous iron under sunlight, and precipitates when it encounters alkaline solution.
It can be used as a nutritional enhancer for cereals and their products, milk and dairy products, infant food, etc. In medicine, brown salt of ferric ammonium citrate can be used as a blood tonic to treat iron deficiency anemia.
Green Ammonium Ferric Citrate Granules are a water-soluble iron salt composed of ferric ions and citric acid, combined with ammonium. The granulated form of this compound is widely used in dairy, cereal products, and infant food as a highly bioavailable iron fortifier. It appears in a greenish hue and is particularly effective for iron supplementation in food products, contributing to the prevention of iron-deficiency anemia.

1. Green Color:
• The green variant of ammonium ferric citrate derives its color from its specific chemical structure. This green form is commonly used in food fortification and certain medical applications due to its stability and efficiency as a source of iron.
2. Granulated Form:
• The granulated form improves flowability and makes the ingredient easier to handle and incorporate into food products. It also enhances the compressibility for use in powdered mixes or supplements.
3. High Solubility:
• Freely soluble in water, making it ideal for incorporation into liquid formulations like dairy products, as well as powdered beverages and cereals. This solubility also ensures uniform iron distribution in fortified products.
4. Bioavailable Source of Iron:
• The iron in ammonium ferric citrate is easily absorbed by the body, making it an excellent iron fortifier. It is particularly useful in addressing iron-deficiency anemia and supporting healthy red blood cell production.
5. Stable in Various Formulations:
• Ammonium ferric citrate remains stable in neutral to slightly acidic environments, making it suitable for dairy products, cereals, and infant formula.
6. Neutral Taste and Odor:
• The compound has a neutral taste and odor, which ensures that it does not alter the flavor of food products, making it ideal for fortifying infant food and other sensitive applications.
1. Dairy Products:
• Used to fortify milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products with iron, making them a more complete source of nutrition. The solubility and neutral flavor profile of ammonium ferric citrate ensure that the taste and texture of dairy products remain unaffected while enhancing their iron content.
2. Infant Formula and Foods:
• Incorporated into infant formula, baby cereals, and other foods for children to provide essential iron for their development. Ammonium ferric citrate helps support brain development, immune function, and physical growth in infants and young children, reducing the risk of anemia.
3. Cereal Products:
• Used in breakfast cereals, oats, and grain-based products to fortify them with iron, making them more nutritious. The granulated form ensures easy mixing and uniform distribution throughout the product.
4. Fortified Beverages:
• Suitable for use in iron-fortified beverages, particularly powdered mixes and ready-to-drink formulas, offering a convenient way for consumers to boost their daily iron intake.
5. Dietary Supplements:
• Green ammonium ferric citrate granules are included in iron supplements or multivitamin-mineral formulas to help treat or prevent iron deficiency in people who require additional dietary iron.
6. Medical Nutrition Products:
• It is also used in medical nutrition products designed for patients who need high iron intake, including those with chronic illnesses or conditions that lead to iron deficiency.
