While the power output of the engine is dependent on a lot of factors, you could increase this by hooking up your lift pump to your factory suction and feed lines. Your limiting factor here will be the flow rating of the lift pump you chose. However, extra precautions might be taken, especially if you use an aftermarket lift pump to increase your power level and fuel delivery volume.
Lift pumps are an essential part of truck customization, especially if the goal is power. They are not as visually-pleasing as a supercharger, but are no less essential. In addition to raising fuel volume, they also improve filtration, allowing better quality fuel to run through the system.
A lift pump supplies low pressure fuel from the tank to the injection pump on the engine, providing roughly 8–15 psi of pressure supply. The injection pump or injectors then pressurizes the fuel into the cylinder at somewhere between 15,000–30,000 psi.
The lift pump reduces the effort that has to be made to pull the fuel all the way from the fuel tank. Having a lift pump can extend the lifespan of your engine, especially since it reduces the stress on the injection pump or injectors. It does this by preventing fuel starvation, which is incredibly damaging to the entire system.
There are two main types of lift pumps; mechanical and electric pumps. The mechanical pumps are used in the old OEM applications and have a fixed fuel pressure and volume. On the other hand, the pressure and volume of electric lift pumps can be adjusted. You can regulate the pump to increase or reduce the pressure.
When it comes to the performance, most buyers opt for lift pumps that are designed for specific gasoline. Product-specific lift pumps produce higher pressures and are pocket-friendly.
If you want to get better results from your engine, you can opt to upgrade your lift pump. The only problem that you may have is the size of a lift pump to choose. Should you buy 100-gph or 150-gph lift pump? A typical truck that has an exhaust, injector and even turbo can work well with a 150-gph lift pump. Those that have bigger injectors should go for lift pumps with more than 150 gph.
