Description

What is the EU PAHs test for electronic products? How many PAHs tests are there? Introduction to PAHs test items and processes

1. What is PAHs certification?

The Chinese name of PAHs is generally called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds. This substance mainly exists in various plastic parts that come into contact with human skin. Therefore, the test is mainly to test the plastic parts on the outside of the product that can come into contact with the human body!

Because this substance can gradually penetrate into the human body during contact and cause harm to the human body, it is necessary to test it to see if its content exceeds the standard!

2. Main components of PAHs

The main 18 compounds of PAHs are: naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene and benzo(g,h,i)perylene, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene.

Material in which PAHs may exist: most non-metallic materials, such as charcoal, crude oil, creosote, tar (natural), drugs, dyes, plastics, rubber, pesticides (artificial), lubricants, demoulding agents, capacitor electrolytes, mineral oils, asphalt (artificial), insecticides, fungicides, mosquito coils, smoking, gasoline retarder (artificial) and others.

Possible harm caused by PAHs: They are strong carcinogens that can damage the reproductive system. Excessive content can easily lead to skin cancer, lung cancer, upper gastrointestinal tumors, arteriosclerosis, infertility and other diseases.

Parts that may contain PAHs: plastic handles / plastic packaging boxes / rubber handles / plastic and rubber products with odor.

III. PAHS regulatory requirements for PAHs

The EU's "Directive on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons" (PAHs Directive 2005/69/EC) issued in 2005 restricts the use of 16 PAHs including benzopyrene (Bap). Based on the fact that imported products with excessive PAHs have been found in German ports, the German Safety Technology Certification Center Experience Exchange Office (ZLS-ATAV) stipulates that from April 1, 2008, all GS mark certification agencies will add PAHs tests. Products that fail to pass the PAHs test will not be able to obtain GS certification and enter Germany smoothly.

PAHs test limit requirements:

1. Materials that may be put into the mouth and toys for children under 3 years old: Bap < 0.2ppm, total amount < 0.2ppm

2. Materials that may cause long-term skin contact (contact time exceeds 30 seconds), toys not covered in Class 1 regulations: Bap < 1ppm, total amount < 10ppm

3. Materials that may cause short-term skin contact (contact time does not exceed 30 seconds) or materials that do not cause contact Bap < 20ppm, total amount < 100ppm

PAHs requirements are required in both the German GS and the EU REACH Annex 17, and the requirements are different. GS tests 15 items and REACH Annex 17 tests 8 items, so it is necessary to confirm the test requirements before testing.

4. Which products need PAHs certification

Detection scope of PAHs:

1. Consumer products such as electronics and motors

2. Rubber products, plastic products, automotive plastics, rubber parts

3. Food packaging materials, toys, container materials, etc.

4. Other materials

5. Validity period of PAHs certification

Many customers are concerned about the validity period of PAHs certification. Generally speaking, if the product materials and standards are not updated, the test results of PAHs certification are always valid, but in fact, some large companies and institutions will question the PAHs reports with a longer time. This is because the longer the production time of general products, the more likely the horticultural materials will change due to cost improvements, etc., and the test results will not be accurate at this time. Therefore, it is recommended to update the test report frequently.

6. Are there factory audits and other subsequent costs for applying for PAHs certification?

PAHs certification is similar to most other chemical certifications, such as RoHS and Reach certification. It only requires sample testing and only test reports, and there is no need for factory review. After customers get PAHs certification, there will be no other subsequent costs.

VII. What information is required for applying for PAHs certification?

1. Provide BOM or pictures (confirm product materials)

2. Test application form

Chemical testing projects like PAHs do not require other complicated information

VIII. PAHs certification process

1. Sample preparation/shipping: liquid ≥20ML; solid ≥50g

2. Confirm and stamp the quotation

3. Receive samples for testing: normal testing cycle is 5-7 working days. If expedited, expedited fees will be charged according to the specific time (except for testing time requirements for the test itself)

4. If the test passes, an electronic report will be issued; if the test fails, the excess will be notified and rectification will be notified. After rectification, retesting can be free of charge. If retesting passes, a report will be issued.
